On Feb. 25, Pope Francis officially declared Father Emil Kapaun, a U.S. Army chaplain who gave his life serving fellow soldiers in a prisoner-of-war camp during the Korean War, “Venerable” — thereby advancing his cause for canonization. For more than half a century, Father Kapaun’s remains were believed to be lost in Korea. But in 2003, one of the men who buried Father Kapaun happened upon his story in Columbia, leading him to help solve a decades-old mystery.
